Ikigai (pronounced "Ee-kee-guy") is a Japanese term which means "reason for being" or "one's sense of purpose." The people of Okinawa, Japan, where the term Ikigai has its roots, are believed to be the world's largest population of centenarians. Their strong connection with the things that make life worthwhile is attributed with a quality of life and longevity.
Above all else, Ikigai represents the intersection between the spiritual and the practical. It's that sweet spot where your natural God-given gifts, talents, and passions align with what the world needs and wants to receive from you. It's your reason for jumping out of bed in the morning! It's your "I'm living in total flow" purpose!
I still remember the day in Kindergarten when I decided, "I want to be smart and successful!" I was determined to make good grades and make my parents proud. I resolved to get a great education, achieve a successful career, make lots of money, and have a beautiful family!
Forty years later, that little five-year old girl had achieved all her dreams and then some. After being the first in her family to graduate from college, she became a certified public accountant, and enjoyed over 25 years buildiing a successful business career. She met and married her soulmate not long after college, and the two of them raised their two daughters in their comfortable suburban neighborhood with great schools, beautiful parks, and perfectly-manicured lawns. Yet, her seemingly perfectly polished life was falling apart.
There were many signs that my life needed to change. On the personal front, I experienced a series of major losses. I lost my mom and aunt to cancer, my maternal grandmother in a sudden car accident, and my paternal grandmother in a violent crime. My father developed dementia and Parkinson's disease, and declined rapidly right in front of our eyes. These losses all tugged at my heart and told me I needed to make a change. To live a more purposeful life, since it is such a gift. To get off the treadmill of working in a career that drained me and didn't allow me to be me. I was drowning, yet the fear of losing the comfortable life, risking failure, and no longer wearing the cape of success that my little five-year old self had envisioned so long ago, kept me stuck for a long time in a place I knew, deep inside, I had no place being.
